With This Goal

Breathing heavily and beaten up, we walked into the locker room all feeling a real sense of desperation. We were losing at half-time and needed to regroup, refocus, rethink our game-plan, and recharge our batteries so that we can go back out and win the game.

I suppose the female version of this story would look two girls going to the lady’s room together in the middle of a double date, hoping to figure out how it’s going.

These stories paint pictures that illustrate why we gather on Sunday nights.

You hear people asking, “So do you go to church?” Or “I am busy on Sunday morning, because I always go to church.” Or “Do you mind picking me up. Great. I am at the church.” All these statement show that many of us have a misunderstanding about what church is. Church is not a building or an event that you attend. Church is the people of God, the Spirit-led people, the living body of Jesus Christ on earth.

At MERGE, we want to stop going to church and start being the church. We think that our end goal is not merely to get butts in pews, but rather to get people out of pews and out into the lives of people, rubbing shoulders with a world that needs Jesus.

We gather in order to be encouraged, regroup, recharge our batteries, and refocus our vision on how to live out Jesus’ mission of restoration in our world. Will you join us?
